Hamner, UNC launch Institute for Drug Safety Sciences - Baltimore Business Journal:

Liver toxicity is a main reason for regulatory agencies to deny approval for new drugs or take actioh againstexisting drugs. The researchers, who are working at the newl formed Institute for DrugSafety Sciences, will use a virtuak model of a liver to test how differenf drugs may affect the organ. The researcuh has the potential to speed up the drug developmentr andtesting process. The Institutr for Drug Safety which opened last week and featuresa 14,000-square-foog research laboratory, will work to study globalo drug safety issues. It is being led by Paul the Verne S. Caviness distinguishedf professor of medicineat UNC.
Watkins, along with his scientis colleagues, will work with members of the biomedical andpharmaceutical sector, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the National Institutes of Health to develop new drug safety The Institute for Drug Safety Sciences was born from an agreement signed in April 2008 between UNC and Hamner to collaboratde on research intodrug safety, drug development and publiv health. It is located on Hamner’s campus in Research Trianglew Park.
