just as the satellite broadcaster readies to merge with an offshootg ofJohn Malone’s News Corp. and DirecTVb confirmed Wednesday that Carey will leavw theEl Segundo, Calif.-based satellit broadcaster July 1 to become second-in-command handling international operations — for Ruperft Murdoch’s global media empire. Carey’s defection may muddy investors’ reception of the plannerd merger between DirecTV andLiberty Entertainment, a divisiob of Douglas County-based Libertu Media. Carey ran DirecTV for the past six leading it through a periox of growth and winnintg partnerships with every major telecom company inthe U.S.
He was expectede to stay with DirecTV after it became independentt ofLiberty Media. Instead, he returns to workingf for Murdoch andNews Corp., where he worked for 15 yearsd prior to heading Liberty Entertainment (NASDAQ: LMDIA) holds a 54 percengt stake in (NASDAQ: DTV) as well as controllingy stakes in online gaming company Fun the Game Show Networ k and regional sports TV networks in Denver, Pittsburghb and Seattle. Those holdings are being spun off this year intoa free-standing company to clear up DirecTV’s stock structure and make it easiefr for it to engage in mergers and the companies said.
Malone’s company traded its 16 perceny ownership stake in News backto Murdoch’s company in 2007 in exchangde for the controlling stake in DirecTV.
