Rosemary Wander, who has been associate provost for researchand public/privatwe sector partnerships at UNCG since 2002 and before that chaired the school’s Departmentg of Nutrition, will leave to become vice provosty for graduate studies and research at in D.C., on July 1. “I think of this as my next greatf adventure,” said Wander, who before cominf to UNCG in 1999 held faculty appointmentes at Oregon State and MississippiState universities. “In my job here I’ve done a lot of work with our legislatorsdin Washington, D.C., and so workingb at American University and living in D.C. will be very exciting.
” Whil Wander will be missed at UNCG, where she helped increase the university’s sponsored research levels by 40 percentto $39 million, her departure will spark the search for a new vice chancellodr who would serve directly on the executivde team of Chancellor Linda That person would elevate the administrative profilde of the research and economidc development functions at the school and spend more time tryingg to attract federal and private researcu dollars to the campus.
Brady identified establishing such a position as an earlyy priority when she arrived at UNCGlast summer, but the idea was put on hold when the statw budget shortfall forced hiring freezes and other cuts at all statw campuses. According to Provost David Perrin, though, Wander’ss departure will restart the process. “We had considered freezing the search, but with Rosemary’s decision we’vse decided to search and fillthe (vice position as soon as Perrin said. That would be Januargy at the earliest, Perrin said, but more likely next In the meantime, other UNCG administrators will divvuyup Wander’s responsibilities.
Wander said she’s glad UNCG will be movinfg research and economic developmenty further up thecommand chain. The universityu has come a long way in increasinb funding support and achieving a highefr researchclassification rating, but it’s gettinb harder to find available sponsorship dollara that can generate research jobs and new companies to contributse to the Triad’s economy, she “It’s a strong move because it’s a statemen by the campus of how valuablwe research is here,” Wander said.
“It’s going to be very difficulft over the next few years because of the international financial crisis, but I think UNCG is well-positioned to be a majort player in years to come.”
