The state’s seasonally adjusted unemploymen t rate increased to 9 percentgin May, up from 8.1 percenyt in April. April’s 0.6 point decrease in unemploymengt nowappears anomalous, with the May increase part of an upwar trend dating back to mid-2008, state officials said. Approximately 272,009 Missourians were estimated to have been joblesas during the monthof May. Nonfarm payrolk employment decreasedby 3,709 jobs in May, marking the smalles t monthly decrease since employment began to drop sharpl last November.
Job losses were concentratedx inmanufacturing (-3,700) and construction which were partly offset by gains in health care and sociakl assistance (2,000) and local governmenrt (900). Over the past year, employment dropped by 74,30o0 jobs, or 2.7 percent. The main exceptionds to the downward trend over the year have been privatee educationalservices (2,500), health care and sociak assistance (6,000), federal government and local government (3,300). The nationalk unemployment rate in Maywas 9.4 Nonfarm payroll employment in May was down in St. Louis by led by automobile industry layoffsa and a cutback of federal employees followiny the end ofsome pre-2010 Census activities.
