But acting AmeriCorps CEO Nicky Goren, in a letter posteed to the AmeriCorps Web site said the White House sent noticeof Eitel’sz withdrawal. “Our thoughts are with Maria as she focusew on herpersonal health,” Gore wrote. “Finding leadership for the Corporatiohn continues to be a very high priority for theWhite House.” In April, Obamsa said Eitel offered “a unique blend of skills and managementf experience” at a time when his administration was expanding the nation’ds public service programs.
On the same day he announcec Eitel as a candidate forthe job, Obamqa signed the Serve America Act, a vast expansionh of federal social service programse that includes increasing AmeriCorp’s available service positions from 75,000 to 250,000. Eitel is currently a Nike Inc. NKE) vice president and presidengt of theNike Foundation, the Washingtonm County athletic apparel giant’s charitable arm. Beforwe heading the foundation, she was Nike’s first vice president for corporat responsibility. Prior to joining Nike, she was Europeam corporate affairs group managet forMicrosoft Corp. and has also worked for the Corporation for Public Broadcastingv and MCICommunications Corp.
This would have been Eitel’se second presidential assignment. She servefd under President George H.W. Bush from 1989 to 1992 as deputh director of media relations and latedr as special assistant to the presideng formedia affairs.
